It was GOLD for Martyn Walton on day one of the swimming in Baku, Azerbaijan at the European Games as the GB team came home first in the final of the Men’s 4×100 Freestyle Relay! Duncan Scott got the team off to a great start with an impressive 49.46 lead-off swim. Martyn took over from Duncan and posted a brilliant 49.43 split to extend the lead over Italy and Russia. On the second day Martyn had two individual semi-finals to negotiate before racing in the Mixed 4×100 Freestyle Relay. With a focus on the 200 IM to come, he swam through the 100m Freestyle semi as a warm-up. The plan worked as Martyn then delivered a PB swim of 2:03.17 to qualify for 200 IM final in 5th place. Then SILVER for Martyn in the Mixed freestyle relay with Duncan Scott, Darcy Deakin and Georgia Coates.

On day 3 Martyn won the BRONZE medal in the 200 IM! With a superb finish on the last 50 metres Martyn stopped the clock at 2:02.24 to finish just behind the Austrian Steffan and GB team-mate Jarvis Parkinson. His time knocks almost one second off the PB he set in yesterday’s semi-final. Then a super SILVER in 4×200 relay with Duncan Scott, Kylie Chisholm and Cameron Kurle behind a very strong Russian Team

On day 4 Martyn had the 200 metre freestyle heats and missed out on reaching the semi-finals on the two competitors from each country rule despite finishing in the top 16!

On day 5 Martyn completed his medal haul in the last race of the Championships in the 4×100 Medley relay as he helped Great Britain to SILVER (3:39.01). Martyn swam the anchor freestyle leg in 50.22 to hold off the challenge of Poland as GB came in just behind the dominant Russian squad. The team comprised of Luke Greenbank, Duncan Scott, Charlie Attwood and Martyn.

Martyn ended the week in Azerbaijan with a total of 5 medals (1 GOLD, 3 SILVER, 1 BRONZE).

The GB Swim team won 23 medals in the pool including 7 gold medals and a World Junior Record for Luke Greenbank in the 200m Backstroke (wow!). Congratulations on a fantastic week to the whole GB team!

Speaking about the experience of swimming in the inaugural European Games, Martyn said: “It’s been one hell of a week for Britain and for us as a whole, the experience and enjoyment we got from it is brilliant and will help us come on leaps and bounds. To come away with medals is great but the experience is priceless in making that step up to seniors.”

Martyn will be in the hunt for more medals at the World Junior Championships in Singapore in August.
