Hatfield are Major League Champions!

On Saturday, April 25th, the third and final round of Major League was held. The Pink Army travelled to Haberdasher’s Boys School to compete in their final round gala. The teams they faced on the night were Watford, Costa, Verulam, Stevenage and Hoddesdon.

The competition was fast and furious with all clubs wanting maximum points and top placings as the final round was worth double league points and could make all the difference in the final standings. Unfortunately, due to a clash with Regional finals for 15 and overs, many swimmers were unavailable for selection in the older age groups. This is where the depth of some teams showed as they were able to field full teams regardless. Luckily, Hatfield had swimmers step up and fill those gaps with some swimmers even swimming up age groups. True team spirit was on show! (Special mentions go to Liam Rumball for competing in more races than he thought possible the night before racing at Regionals and also Lucas Hartley for postponing his return to university and withdrawing from his regional swims on the Saturday in order to swim for us at major league instead.)

With the balcony bright with supporters in their pink t-shirts and flags flying, Hatfield swimmers raced hard for every point. There were lots of very close finishes and the relays were as exciting as ever. The noise was unbelievable during the squadron relay especially as Liam chased down the Costa swimmer to take the win by the narrowest of margins.

The team grouped together for team photos while we waited nervously for the results to be announced. One by one the team positions were read out from 6th up to 3rd without us hearing our club’s name. Then there was a dramatic pause before 2nd place was announced as Watford meaning that we had won on the night! Cheers erupted from our swimmers and supporters as the result sunk in! We had won on the night by over 40 points which was a magnificent feat and showed just how well everyone had performed.

The next announcements were the league results. Hatfield has amassed the most gala points as well as league points. We had retained our Major League title and were 2026 Champions! What a fantastic night and brilliant result. Well done to all the swimmers who made this possible over all three rounds of the competition! Congratulations Pink Army!
