ASA East Region Youth & Senior Championships

2-4 May 2015 – Luton (50m)

Hatfield’s leading swimmers demonstrated their strength by storming to the top club award at the East of England Regional Championships in Luton last weekend. An impressive overall tally of 39 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze medals across the three-day competition was easily enough to secure the title from nearest rivals City of Peterborough.

Of the 21 different swimmers who claimed an individual medal, 14 year-old Nathan Hughes was the most successful, claiming no less than 9 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals from his efforts. Tackling a hefty schedule that would see Hughes contest every event in the 15 years age band, as well as three relay swims (30 races in three days!), his winning performances came in the: 100 & 200 Breaststroke, 200 & 400 Freestyle, 200 & 400 Individual Medley, the 200 Butterfly, plus as part of the Boys 14-16 years 4×100 and 4×200 Freestyle Relay teams.

Great Britain junior international Martyn Walton continued his good form of 2015 with an impressive eight gold medals from his eight events. The European Games bound swimmer secured individual wins in the boys 17/over section came in the 100, 200 & 400 metre Freestyle events, as well as the 200 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley. To these he added relay gold medals as the Hatfield 17/over quartet grabbed the win in all three relay events.

In the Girls 17/over category, freestyle ace Jessica Jackson was in dominant form collecting gold medal winning swims in the 50, 100, 200 & 400 metre events. A further three golds followed in the respective relay events as well as a silver medal in the 50 Butterfly race. Lily West was part of the same three winning relays as Jackson but also confirmed her growing individual reputation with podium topping swims in the 17/over 200 Butterfly and 200 & 400 Individual Medley events.

Laura Copping and Will Kearsey both picked up a brace of individual gold medals. Copping surprised her rivals by coming from behind to do the double in the Girls 15 years 100 & 200 Breaststroke events, while Kearsey did likewise in the Boys 17/over 50 & 100 Backstroke contests before joining up with Walton in the winning Boys 17/over relay teams.

Eight swimmers were single gold medal winners: Elinah Phillip (Girls 15 years 50 Butterfly), Faye Nugent (Girls 17/over 100 Backstroke), Pippa Shuttleworth (Girls 17/over 200 Backstroke), Ben Garratt (Boys 15 years 50 Butterfly), Luke Sugden (Boys 16 years 200 Butterfly), Luke Turley (Boys 15 years 50 Freestyle), Maddy Churchman (Girls 17/over 200 Breaststroke), Harry Constantine (Boys 15 years 100 Backstroke).
