Hatfield Waterpolo Team win Herts KO Cup Final 2014 !

  • December 1, 2014

Report by Peter Mole:

Hatfield, who earlier in the season won promotion from Hertfordshire’s second division, took on first division champions Watford. Helped by an 18-2 handicap advantage they ended up 25-30 winners. Hertfordshire’s ASA President, and Hatfield club secretary, Ann Quinn presented the trophy to a jubilant Hatfield team.

The match started with Watford very much in the ascendancy. At half time Watford had scored 12 goals and despite Alex Waller, Charlie Briers and Andy Rollo each scoring once, Watford were ahead of the rate needed to turn over the handicap.

But Hatfield had other ideas, and opened the third quarter strongly. In the first 2 minutes Hatfield had scored 4 goals without Watford replying. First Stefano Cortellini broke free on the left hand side of the goal and deftly lobbed the Watford keeper, then, twice, Charlie Briers took full advantage of Watford having a man excluded to beat the keeper before scoring his 4th goal in open play. Suddenly Hatfield started to believe in their ability to score. Watford came back strongly scoring 5 goals and showing their speed on the counter attack. However Allan Wollaston and Richard Waller each converted an opportunity to allow Hatfield to win the quarter 6-5 and leave Watford requiring 8 more goals to draw level.

Two early goals in the fourth quarter gave Watford hope, but then Hatfield came back through Allan Wollaston after a Watford player was sent to the sin bin. The cut and thrust continued. Watford pulled two goals back, one when Hatfield were a man down. Watford had two good opportunities when Hatfield had further players. But good saves from Andy Rolle followed by a well taken goal by Hatfield’s Rob Threadgold saw Watford once again needing 6 goals with just over two minutes to play. It was too much for Watford – they scored twice when Hatfield had men sent out – but when they in turn had a defender excluded and Hatfield scored with 30 seconds to go it was all over. A superb second half from Hatfield, which they just lost 11-9 to the Div 1 champions, saw them jubilantly defend their handicap with 5 goals to spare..
