Peanuts League Round 1 – winning start for Hatfield

  • May 11, 2015

Hatfield’s A and B Peanuts teams got off to a great start to the 2015 league season on Saturday 9 May, with round 1 victories for the A team at Stevenage and the B team at Potters Bar.  Our coaches have reported on the evening’s fast and furious racing and Zumba warm ups below!

Peanuts A Team (09.05.15) – coached by Jack Jackson, Ingrid Wilkes & Alex Faulkner
This was my first experience of managing a Hatfield team since joining Hatfield in February and the swimmers certainly delivered.  We were at Stevenage Swimming Centre for the first round of the Peanuts league in Division 1.  We had some great swims throughout the evening – no doubt aided by our distinctive Zumba-inspired Land Based Warmup  which some of our swimmers may have found a little embarrassing to begin with – but will now be looking forward to repeating before Round 2!

We came 1st in 56% of the races with the majority of the others at 2nd place.  Our relays were particularly strong on the night, with some great team performances from all age groups. Every swimmer swam their socks off in the relays, even when we were 25 metres ahead of the other teams – which was great to see.

The final points on the night were as follows: 6th Place (214 pts) = Verulam, 5th Place (198 pts) = Stevenage, 4th Place (191 pts) = Berkhamsted, 3rd Place (175 pts) = Bishops Stortford, 2nd Place (165 pts) = Costa B, 1st Place (94 pts) = Hatfield A.

It was a great performance to finish 71 pts ahead of Costa B.  The atmosphere was incredible and I really felt like we were a great team on Saturday – T.E.A.M (Together. Everyone. Achieves. More).  We will be looking forward to Round 2 where the competition is about to get tougher with clubs such as Watford A and Costa A aiming to win.

The B team was also in action on Saturday night at Potters Bar, in our new Division, after gaining promotion last year. There was some tough competition as a few of the clubs we swam against had their A teams there. We prepared for action by having a group stretch, warm-up, some face (and body) painting, and a loud cheer led by coach Hannah.

Then it was time to race! Everyone tried really hard and when the kids weren’t racing, they cheered on their teammates. For some of the youngest swimmers it was their first experience at racing – they all handled it very well. We got off to a strong start and when the first point totals were read out, we realized we were winning by 1 point! That raised the excitement levels and spurred the team on.
Our youngest girls, the 9 year olds (Saran, Robyn, India and Isabella), were very strong, winning both of their relays. The U11 girls (Antonia, Caitlin, Georgia and Ruby) put in a great performance too and also came first in both of their relays. They were matched by the U12 girls (Clara, Eleanor, Sophie and Ella) who swam to victory in their relays as well! Our U11 boys (Luke, Finlay, Luis and Ben P) put in a good performance managing a first in the medley relay and second in the free. Special mention goes to our 9 year old boys, 2 of whom (Tarran and Hayden) were swimming for the first time, and Robert (8) and Lucas (7) who joined them to make sure they could field a relay team. Both of their relays came in 2nd place! We knew we were in with a shot at winning but also knew it would be close.
When the final 3 results were read out, they were as follows: Cheshunt 160, Tring 150, Hatfield 141. Everyone let out a huge cheer! We’d won by 9 points! The whole team had a great time and swam their hearts out. We’re already looking forward to Round 2!
