Pink Army Volunteers at the St Albans Half Marathon

Early on the morning of Sunday, June 8, Pink Army volunteers arrived at Verulamium Park to run the baggage drop for the St Albans Half Marathon. This is an event we have volunteered at for three years now and it brings in much-needed funds for the club. We also get to show off our pink shirts and get a bit of advertising for the club while helping out a local sporting event. Distances raced at the weekend were 5k, 10k, half marathon and 1.5 mile fun run. One of our swimmers, Emma Sofronov, ran the 5k as well as volunteered. Another, Emily Carter, was spotted doing the 10k. Emma’s dad also ran the half marathon.

The weather was good on the day and we were very busy taking in bags, putting them in order and then returning them to the correct owners. Our work began at 7am and we handed back the last bag around midday. Usually we have about twelve volunteers on the day but unfortunately this year, a few couldn’t make it so we had to make do with nine. We were kept busy but enjoyed chatting to all the runners, listening to the live music and visiting the various stalls set up in the area. Some of us even got given ice lollies at the end!
